This is Daibutsu, the Great Buddha, and the statue really is great! It was completed in 1252 and is the second largest Buddha (44 ft tall), however, may people consider it to be the most impressive because it is outside and surrounded by beautiful trees. It was originally housed like the largest Buddha, but a tsunami washed away the hall in 1495, it has been out in the open ever since.
I was also able to go inside the Buddha and see diagrams of how it was cast. You can also rub the belly for good luck. No worries, Daibutsu is peaceful, he didn't mind a little tickle and let me out of his belly unscathed! ;)

Side Note: I also want to thank Mr. Greg Regalado. One of the things he teaches is photography and he was with me in Kamakura. We nicknamed him the paparazzi (only in a good way) because he took great photographs. He shared his shots with us and the first one in this entry is his. A few others around Kamakura are his too. Thanks Greg!
